Walking Pains – Superfeet Super Boots

I expect when I write about aches and pains from hiking most of my regular blog readers will be nodding in agreement; it’s a pain in the…..

I’ve always been a little heavier than perhaps I should be. I’m 6’1″ tall, 43 years old (2015) and broad build. I get stuck in kissing gates on my own, ha ha.

Walking Distance – My Mental Barrier

I knew in my head that I could manage a 20-25 mile day hike without too much extra training. I have the strength in my legs and plenty of energy most days.

What was stopping me reach my mental goal of +20 miles was a nagging pain in my heels. Plantar fasciitis became a phrase that haunted my Google searches. I could manage around 6 miles of hiking before the heel pain kicked in.

Walking Wicklow – Bray Head

I walk lots and not just in the South Downs of England. I was very fortunate to live in Ireland for a few years recently within sight of the majestic Wicklow Mountains and the picturesque Irish east coast.

If you don’t know the area well, the Wicklow Mountains are towards the east/ south-east coast of Ireland and are just over an hour drive south of Dublin. My local walk from home, took in the equally dramatic but more accessible coastline.

Walking Greystones to Bray Cliff Path

I’m still surprised to this day by the number of people who have never explored Ireland, beyond a stag or hen weekend in Dublin. Such a shame. Dublin is less than an hour’s flight away from many of the UK’s major airports, even Gatwick in the south of England to Dublin is only 55 minutes flying time.

Montane Terra Pants Review

My review of Mens Terra Pants – Outdoor Trousers by Montane. All items reviewed have been tested by myself when out walking / hiking. I walk in all seasons, warm sunshine, rain, wind and a bit of snow and was looking for good quality walking trousers that would tick all those boxes.

I wanted something that was lightweight to wear, quick drying and above all; tough wearing. I did a lot of research online and one brand name seemed to rise to the top of my search list.

Rab MeCo Long Sleeve T-Shirt Review

My review of Mens MeCo 120 Long Sleeve Tee by Rab. All items reviewed have been tested by myself when out walking / hiking. I’ve always struggled with base layers. I tend to feel much too hot if I wear too many layers, or indeed too many thick layers.

Another downside of conventional layers, as most of us are aware, is the wet back from wearing a rucksack over a waterproof jacket.

Steyning Super Bowl Walk

Earlier in the week I was considering a South Downs walk either Saturday or Sunday, the last day of January or the first day of February (pinch, punch). The weather forecast was for cold conditions and a strong wind.

I looked out of the window early Saturday morning and to my (childhood) amazement I could see snow on the ground. What followed in the next 15 minutes was the quickest gathering of walking gear, goodbyes to a disgruntled partner (I can’t collect trekking poles and rucksack quietly it would seem) and departure.

South Downs Snow

As I write this blog post a few days later there is snow again on the South Downs; the weather is fickle around these parts. A few miles to the west in Hampshire there is snow and ice blocking roads up the Downs;
